jumpchrisjump.com: my grip height epiphany

16' Pacer Carbon, 15-3 grip, 2 Lefts (4 steps), 13-6 takeoff

I actually noticed when I slowed the video down that I am actually taking off that far out and holding that high from 2 lefts. Of course, I cant move the pole to vertical from there, but it makes me think I can jump that grip from closer than a full approach. I'm maintaining a good position and Bryan is assisiting once i can move the pole anymore. We may try the same drill from 4 lefts.

I had to post this. I want BET to start airing pole vault jumps again.

NEW 3 LEFT PR- 4.30m

Of course I don't have the video. Here are the details:
3 lefts from 42', 11' take-off, 13'6" 16.0 Pacer FX, with a 13' grip

The jump was looking great off the ground, but I paused instead of keeping constant pressure on the pole. this caused a "flag out" position off the top, but with a slight brush of the chest I was over 4.30m.

This is from last season:
4 Lefts 56', 11' take-off, 14' 18.4 flex, 13'6" grip, Bungee/Bar at 4.30

I've topped what I was doing from 4 from 3...Already.

We raised the bar to 4.40m, I bumped my grip to just over 13-1 and had three close misses:
3 lefts from 42'
14' 18.4 Pacer Carbon, with a 13-1' grip
average of 10-9 on the take off.
I was getting a little fatigued and forcing the jumps, however my swing and release were much better than my earlier clearances at 4.00m and 4.30m.

I am more confident that with a very good (patient top end) jump, I can jump over 4.50m from three maybe even squeak over 15' exactly. I'll try a few more sessions from three then its on to four where I hope to raise my 4 Left PR by at least 6 inches and hopefully catch it on video.

Inspiration

I was at work when I got this email and it made me stop what I was doing, take a 15 minute break, reminisce on how far I have progressed and what my goals are. I typed a nice response and went back to work feeling 10 times more motivated. If I know that what I do can inspire one person it motivates me to try to motivate 10 more people to achieve their dreams. Very close to new 6 inch bests

Had a great practice from 3 lefts today. Felt like I was keeping more energy in the pole. Feeling more efficient already. After seeing the some of the changes show up, it makes me think that I used to only depend on athleticism to jump. And by no means am I the world greatest athlete.

David saw my truck jump and was convinced he could top it with no drop step. Let the games begin.

U.C. > OSU

I only posted this because my resentment (as a sports fan, only) for OSU, outweighs my disappointment with the University of Cincinnati AD when they cut Men's Track and CC Programs future scholarships.

Congrats to my Alma Mater (05 and 07)...I hope this success brings the sorely needed income back to the AD.

This Weekend: R.I.P. Cincinnati

Absolutely a great weekend in Cincinnati. Definitely the type of event that moves the culture of a city forward. I'm going to try to integrate more "culture" posts. I pole vault most of time, but every once in a while I go out.

The Most Extreme Polevaulting Guide EVER

Great video but "Not recommended for those who actually want to polevault without dying." I'll take their advice for it.

Alex Baldwin now attends the University of Illinois. He is training alongside the pole vaulters. He should have a great year.

Question and Answer

hey Chris, how's everything going? this may seem kinda random, but I had a few questions for you, regarding vaulting. First off, I think you're a great technician, you have a lot of talent and power, and I really appreciate all the training videos you put up. My questions have to do with why you're not vaulting higher. Now, from your video's, i can't see everything, but from what i DO see, your technique looks pretty solid. Do you think your height it your limiting factor?? (how tall are you, anyway?? you never gave me a straight answer about that haha). Do you think it may be speed or gymnastic ability?? What do you think it may be?? Perhaps you're just not training like you used to? I don't know, but i personally think you have the ability to still go 5.50+ Thanks for all your input man, be good. -Joe

10/08 Sand Swings

I do much better when I add the swing. I am getting a good takeoff but still working on swinging down the middle and landing in line with my takeoff. In my actual jump, I have tendency to favor the right side of the bar. This drill works on that tendency and as I perfect it, that tendency should show up less and less in my jumps.

I am a post-collegiate pole vaulter with a personal best of 5.42m or 17' 9.25" (Click here for 2008 Video). I am a 2005 graduate of The University of Cincinnati and I have chosen to continue my athletic career beyond college. As a Cincinnati Bearcat, I was team captain and national level competitor. My personal best from college was 5.41m or 17' 9" (Click here for the 2005 Video), also Cincinnati's Indoor Pole Vault Record.
Off of the track, I was an Academic All-American, a campus leader and an advocate for student athletes. As a senior, I was the proud recipient of the Jimmy Nippert Award (Male Athlete of the Year, 2005). My greatest accomplishments in college were winning a team and individual Conference USA Championship, helping student-athletes get involved in the surrounding community, and most of all, graduating with a Master's Degree in 2007 (3.5 GPA). After completing my graduate studies, I moved to Champaign, IL to begin training full time, with the goal of jumping 5.79 meters or higher.
